Information security is critical to all organisations. Breaches in information security have led many organisations and businesses to lose valuable business information such as customers’ personal data. The loss of sensitive information places organisations at financial and legal risks and it can seriously damage their reputation and customer trust. Other implications include loss of competitive advantage, drop in revenue, share price and investor confidence. Organisations and employees are both responsible for managing information securely, understanding the security risks and ensuring compliance with security policies.
Information security should be a priority for all organisations because the consequences can be catastrophic. Lapses in information security can off lead to data breaches and loss or theft of confidential, business data. Breaches can cause considerable damage to businesses through financial penalties and loss of reputation – these factors determine the longevity and profitability of a business.
Information security refers to any business information, data and assets – stored within office premises, on devices such as office computers and within the cloud. The nature of organisational information means it can be accessed illegally by unauthorised people such as cyber criminals. Cybercriminals collect business information (e.g. email addresses and passwords) and sell them on the dark web or use them for phishing scams, identity theft.
If employees are made aware of the threats that face them, they will be able to correctly detect the threats and prevent risks to information security. It is therefore beneficial to raise awareness and training employees on the threats posed by cybercriminals, keeping business information secure and mitigating the risks to information security.
