With over 4.5 billion people online in 2020, individual and organisational security on the Internet continues to remain a growing concern. It is a known fact that information sent over the Internet or by email is not necessarily secure. The Internet contains billions of websites with more being created every day, and there are even more emails daily.
Recently, ‘HTTP’ protocols aren’t even considered safe and secure anyway, as they have become more increasingly at risk of being intercepted by hackers. Even information and passwords sent via standard, unencrypted wireless are especially easy for hackers to intercept nowadays.
It is important for your employees to understand the risks to help maintain the cyber security and information security of your organisation.
Hackers often use emails to inflict a cyberattack on unsuspecting employees and businesses. Such emails often include attachments which once opened, create an entry point for hackers to get into the system. They could be disguised as a document, voicemail or PDF. Another threat is links to malicious webpages resulting in downloading malware, ransomware or data breaches.
Internet is used extensively in both professional and personal contexts. With cybercriminals looking to exploit vulnerabilities, it’s important to use the Internet safely to minimise the risk of a cyberattack. Using the Internet safely requires practicing safe browsing and making sure the Internet connection is secure. Be careful of what you download from the Internet and always keep your anti-virus software up to date.
Web browsers can be dangerous if you are using default settings which are often basic and unable to prevent cyberattacks. Failing to secure a web browser can quickly lead to spyware being installed without your knowledge or intruders taking control of your computer. Since a growing number of web apps rely on web browsers, there is an increasing threat from cyberattacks that take advantage of lapses in web browser security.
