This helpful Toolkit enables you to understand the purpose of Data Protection Impact Assessments (DPIAs), the benefits and the important steps in the DPIA process. The Toolkit is designed to raise awareness on how DPIAs can benefit organisations and ensure compliance with the GDPR. This toolkit also covers the importance of privacy by design and the impact of any new data processing activities on the privacy of individuals.
The aim of the DPIA toolkit is to provide learners with all the knowledge and tools required to complete an Impact Assessment. The toolkit includes DeltaNet International’s guide to DPIAs (a downloadable PDF document containing templates for users to follow), an Excel format Risk Assessment template document, an online Risk Assessment template, and other reference materials and links that users may find useful when completing a DPIA.

Data Protection Impact Assessments (or DPIAs) can help organisations ensure compliance with their data protection obligations. An effective Impact Assessment will identify and reduce the data protection risks facing organisations and enable members of staff to fix any problems before a data breach can occur. Additionally, by completing a Data Protection Impact Assessment, organisations can design more efficient and effective processes for handling personal data in the future.
A DPIA is designed to help organisations systematically analyse, identify and minimise the data protection risks of a project or plan. It falls under the accountability obligations of the data protection regulations, and when performed correctly, it can help organisations assess and demonstrate how they comply with their data protection obligations. It is not aimed at completely eliminating the risks but instead, it helps minimise the risks and determine whether or not the level of risk is acceptable in the circumstances.
Under Article 35 of the GDPR, organisations must carry out a DPIA when the data processing is likely to result in a high risk to data subjects. Overall though, it is recommended for any business or organisation that wants to incorporate the GDPR principle of ‘privacy by design’ while processing of personal data or any other activity that impacts the privacy of individuals.
Under the accountability principle of data protection regulations, a DPIA is important to help businesses review and validate any gaps in noncompliance with their data protection obligations. While a DPIA is not aimed at completely eliminating the risks, it can definitely help minimise the risks and determine whether or not the level of risk is acceptable in the circumstances.
