All individuals have the right to access their personal data from organisations that process them. Under data protection regulations, this is commonly referred to as making a data subject access request (SAR). When organisations receive SAR from individuals, asking to confirm how their personal data is bring processed, organisations must comply and provide copies of personal data. There is specifical regulation around handling subject access requests and it is vital to train your customer-facing staff in handling SAR in line with regulations and in the best interests of your customers.
All individuals have the right to ask an organisation whether or not they are using or storing their personal information. It is also possible to request copies of the personal information they hold, either verbally or in writing. This is called the right of access and is commonly known as making a subject access request or SAR.
Individuals can make a subject access request to find out what personal information an organisation holds, how they are using it, who they are sharing it with and where they got their data from. A SAR can help individuals exercise their other information rights effectively such as revising incorrect information and withdrawing consent.
When an organisation receives a subject access request, they must respond within a month. It is good practice to provide supplementary information to the individual about why and how their data is processes and maintained by the organisation. Organisations can also advise them of their additional data protection rights, including the right to complain to the supervisory authority.
