The Importance of Data Protection Training

Personal data is any information that can be used to identify a living person, including name, address, IP addresses or payroll data. Most organisations use personal data as part of day-to-day operations. Transfer of personal data is now heavily regulated under various data protection regulations. Organisations must familiarise their workforce with awareness training on data protection regulations and ensure they are following the best practice when it comes to securely handling data.

A personal data breach is broadly defined as a security incident that has affected the confidentiality, integrity or availability of the personal data. It is a breach of security leading to the accidental or unlawful destruction, loss, alteration, unauthorised disclosure of, or access to, personal data. This includes any personal data breaches that are the result of either accidental or deliberate causes.

As per the GDPR, restricted transfers of personal data apply to processing of the personal data the organisation is transferring. If the personal data is sent or made accessible to a receiver to which the GDPR does not apply, usually applicable to recipients located in a country outside the EEA. It also applies if the receiver is a separate organisation or individual, including any transfers to another company within the same corporate group.

A data retention policy is a best practice for setting retention policies on the personal data stored by organisations. It is often a set of guidelines to help organisations keep a record of how long data and information is kept and how to dispose of the information when it is no longer needed.
