Most organisations process personal data as part of processes to sell customers their products and services. Protecting the privacy of individuals and giving them rights over the collection and use of their personal data is the main goal of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). Compliance breaches with the GDPR can lead to heavy fines and reputational damage for organisations. It is therefore vital to raise awareness amongst employees and ensure implementation of best practice while processing and controlling personal data.
The GDPR stands for the General Data Protection Legislation and is the most stringent set of data protection rules in the world. It is a European Union (EU) legal framework that came into effect on 25th May 2018. GDPR governs the way in which organisations can use, process, and store personal data. It applies to all organisations within the EU, as well as those supplying goods or services to the EU or monitoring EU citizens.
The GDPR sets out seven key principles which should lie at the heart of an organisation’s approach to processing personal data. They are lawfulness, fairness and transparency, purpose limitation, data minimisation, accuracy, storage limitation, integrity and confidentiality (security) and accountability.
Compliance with GDPR compliance is vital for organisations and essential for maintaining good practice while handling data. Lack of awareness could compromise processing of personal data and ay even result in data breaches, leading to huge fines, reputational damage and loss of trust. A fine under GDPR can cost businesses up to €20,000,000 or 4% of global turnover, whichever is greater.
