PREVENT is one element of the UK Government’s four-part counter-terrorism strategy. PREVENT is intended to stop people becoming terrorists and supporting terrorism by challenging extremism and preventing radicalisation. Before considering this, it is important to understand what is meant by the terms extremism and radicalisation, and this eLearning course is designed to enable employees understand how it can affect individuals and organisational culture and how to raise concerns.
Extremism is defined as a “vocal or active opposition to fundamental British values, including democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of different faiths and beliefs”.
Radicalisation refers to the process by which a person comes to support terrorism and forms of extremism that lead to terrorism.
It is essential that employees know how to identify vulnerable and at-risk people. Both social indicators and critical risk factors should be considered when working with people to determine if they are vulnerable to extremist views and at risk of radicalisation.

PREVENT is one of the four elements of CONTEST, the UK government’s counter-terrorism strategy. The main purpose of PREVENT is to stop individuals from becoming terrorists or supporting terrorism. The strategy is designed to offer practical help and guidance to prevent individuals from being drawn into terrorism and ensure they are given appropriate advice and support.
For compliance with the duties recommended by the regulators, all businesses should demonstrate an awareness and understanding of the risk of radicalisation in their organisation. There are three essential themes set out by the UK government as part of their PREVENT strategy and is vital for all businesses – effective leadership, working in partnership and appropriate capabilities.
