The most obvious sign of stress is a change from previous behaviour. Examples might be a previously friendly colleague who withdraws socially or a team member suddenly arriving very early or late to work on a regular basis. If managers notice these signs, they should make sure they are doing all they can to support the employee.
The symptoms of too much stress can be both mental and physical. They include decreased energy, more frequent illnesses such as colds, irritability or increased emotional outbursts and broken concentration. Prolonged or extreme stress can cause mental health issues such as anxiety and depression, so stress needs to be taken seriously by employers and employees alike.
Employees are most at risk of stress at times of change in an organisation, when the workload of the employees is unusually high or when there is interpersonal conflict in the team. Managers should be particularly vigilant for signs of stress at these times but also be aware that stress can strike at any time.
