The Importance of Asbestos Training

Asbestos is one of the most dangerous building materials ever used and it’s vital that proper online asbestos awareness training is given to those who are at risk of coming into contact with it.

The training is important because, prior to the year 2000, asbestos was widely utilised by the construction industry for roofing, flooring, and for insulating homes and office blocks.

Unfortunately, thousands of people still fall ill every year due to exposure to asbestos, the fibres of which can cause respiratory diseases such as lung cancer and scarring of the lining of the lungs.

However, with a proper asbestos awareness course, those most at risk can avoid contact with this life-threatening substance.

If you have any questions that are not covered here, please get in touch.

Asbestos can be present in dozens of materials and all buildings constructed before the year 2000 may include it. Examples include textiles, plastic-based products and wall fillings. A good rule of thumb is “if in doubt, assume asbestos is present”. Never do work in areas with known asbestos until you have consulted an expert.

The responsibility for managing asbestos lies with the owner or “responsible person” with a duty over the premises in question. They must make sure their buildings are safe for everybody to work in and use. More broadly, all workers need to know when to recognise the dangers of asbestos so they do not unwittingly disturb it.

Asbestos exposure can damage people’s health in several ways. Thousands of deaths every year are attributed to it. As the fibres are breathed in, most of the associated health problems focus on the lungs. Asbestosis and mesothelioma (a rare form of cancer) are examples of the health problems that can arise from asbestos exposure.
