Home > Health And Safety Training > DSE Display Screen Equipment Challenge
We spend a lot of time at our desks. It’s essential our computers and workstations are set up to avoid aches and pains, and ultimately long-term musculoskeletal disorders.
Our Display Screen Equipment Challenge course covers the risks associated with display screen equipment and what both employees and managers can do to reduce them. Whether you work in an office, at home or on the move, you need to think about DSE.
Meet David as he sets up his work environment. Spot the hazards and help him make the right decisions, keeping his risk-o-meter in the green to pass!

If your DSE and workstation are not set up correctly they can cause health problems. In this module, we visit David in his office – where his workstation set up is far from perfect. The module covers the employer’s responsibilities to protect their employees and where the main danger points lie.
This module takes a deeper look at the workspace and its effects on our health and safety. David’s manager, Zoe, goes through each of the display screen equipment’s risk factors and suggests areas for improvement. Chairs, monitors, keyboards and mice or touch pads are some of the topics covered.
Even when an employee is working out of the office, on the move or from home, the DSE requirements still apply – as does the employer’s duty to protect their employees by implementing them. In this module, David and Zoe consider the risks when remote working or hotdesking.
Learners answer multiple-choice questions about David’s workstation and the correct way to set up and use DSE. Correct answers keep the risk-o-meter in the green; incorrect answers push the risk-o-meter further into the red. Keep it in the green to pass the course!

How much of your working day is spent using Display Screen Equipment (DSE)? For many people, it is most or all of the average day.
It’s important that DSE is correctly set up and used properly. Taking regular breaks is important. If our DSE is not set up or used correctly, it can cause musculoskeletal disorders and long-term pain. It can also cause neck, back, and shoulder pain, sore arms, fatigue and eye strain.
Correctly set up work stations are integral to productivity and employee wellbeing.
Most people who use DSE as part of their job need a DSE assessment. This includes people who work on-site or remotely. DSE users are workers who use DSE almost daily, for continuous periods of an hour or more, and transfer data quickly to or from the DSE. Agency workers and employees both require DSE assessments.
The main health risks of working with DSE are musculoskeletal problems, eye strain and headaches. These can be largely avoided with good posture, stretching exercises, a well set-up workstation and regular breaks from the screen every hour. Problems arising from bad DSE set-ups can get gradually worse over a period of years.
Back pain can be caused by the incorrect use of DSE, especially over a long period of time. Neck pain, eye strain and headaches can also be caused by it. Risk assessing the DSE usage and making sure you have the correct equipment and posture can help significantly with these issues.
