When it is overused or used incorrectly, display screen equipment can pose a risk to the health and safety of employees. The effects can be immediate or long-term. This module explores the legislation covering DSE, the associated hazards and health issues and the importance of good posture.
This module demonstrates the ways in which to set up your display screen equipment correctly, whether you are in a fixed workstation in an office or working remotely. Learners will discover how to set up and work at their workstations and how to adjust their chairs in order to remain both safe and comfortable.
Working with DSE is a huge part of many people’s working lives but there are steps we can all take to reduce the risk of health complications. This module looks at the importance of regular breaks, handy exercises to prevent fatigue, pain and discomfort, and how to handle pre-existing health problems.
Learners are assessed via multiple-choice questions about display screen equipment (DSE), including how to set it up. They must achieve a mark of 80% or above to pass.

Display Screen Equipment (DSE) is part of our daily working lives but it’s important that it’s set up correctly and used well, with regular breaks. Prolonged improper use can result in musculoskeletal disorders and long-term pain. It can also cause neck, back, and shoulder pain, sore arms, fatigue and eye strain.
Making sure your organisation knows how to correctly set up workstations is integral to productivity and employee wellbeing.
Employers have a legal requirement to protect their workers from any harm that could result from using Display Screen Equipment (DSE). It is part of their duty of care to their employees’ health and safety. It is important to remember that this requirement remains whether somebody is working in the workplace or remotely.
The main piece of legislation handling DSE in the UK is the Display Screen Equipment Regulations 1992 as amended in 2002. The 2002 updates took into the account the changes in technology over this period. These regulations provide a starting point for identifying the possible health problems associated with DSE and mitigating them for employees.
DSE assessments are a requirement regardless of where the employee is working. Home workers can be at greater risk of harm from DSE or improper use of DSE since workstations can vary so much. All health and safety duties apply to home working staff as much as office-based staff.
