Home > Health And Safety Training > DSE Working with Dual Screens
Many work tasks require the use of more than one monitor attached to the same computer at the same time. It can make comparing two sets of data simpler and helps productivity. From design work to spreadsheet analysis, dual screens can make work life easier for many tasks.
Working with dual screens can also increase the risk of DSE-related health problems. Our Working with Dual Screens short course teaches learners how to set up dual screens correctly, making visual and musculoskeletal complications less likely.
Our Working with Dual Screens short course is a single module covering how to work safely and productively with two or more screens. This way of working can bring greater benefits but setting up a workstation with two screens is more challenging. This course explores how to do it correctly and avoid the associated health risks.

Learners’ knowledge is tested at the end of the course with a multiple-choice quiz checking their knowledge on working with dual screens. Depending on their performance, they may be encouraged to speak to their manager for more detailed information on the topic.

Display Screen Equipment (DSE) is part of our daily working lives but it’s important that it’s set up correctly and used well, with regular breaks. Prolonged improper use can result in musculoskeletal disorders and long-term pain. It can also cause neck, back, and shoulder pain, sore arms, fatigue and eye strain.
Making sure your organisation knows how to correctly set up workstations is integral to productivity and employee wellbeing.
Dual monitors make it easier to compare different data sets and images, rather than having to click between them as you might on a single screen. They allow users to run two programs or apps at the same time. Some people find dual screens make them more productive and better able to visualise information.
Dual monitors should be at the right level so as not to cause undue strain on the neck, back, or any other musculoskeletal problem associated with incorrect DSE use. Most machines are set up to handle dual screens so the process of connecting them should be straightforward; however, you may need to adjust them.
Dual monitors can cause neck, shoulder and back pain if they are not positioned correctly. This is because they are often used simultaneously, meaning the neck is constantly moving to allow you to see both. If they are properly set up and a risk assessment has taken place, they should not be bad for your neck.
