Hundreds of traffic accidents every week involve people travelling for work. With many people driving for work on a regular basis or even daily, it makes sense to consider their training and the training of the managers planning their journeys.
Employers have duties under health and safety law to manage the risks faced by their workers on the road, and also a moral duty of care to protect their employees, the general public, and the reputation of their company. Organisations should ensure that a clear driving for work policy is in place and that sufficient driving training has been given prior to asking employees to drive for work purposes.
You prepare for a work trip by making sure your vehicle is in good working condition and you have the means to contact somebody if you have any problems, such as a charged mobile phone. Make sure you plan only a safe amount of driving for each day and you have all the paperwork and details you need.
You should check your company policy about driving at work. If a company car is not available, you can use your personal vehicle in certain circumstances, provided that it has the correct insurance for business travel. You should be able to claim back expenses such as petrol costs.
Risk assessments for driving at work are required. Possible hazards arising from the driver, the vehicle and the journey itself can be brought up in the risk assessment process and the correct control measures can be put in place. Driving is one of the most dangerous tasks many people will undertake in their working lives.
