Working with electricity is part of the modern world. Electricity can be dangerous, causing injury, fire or even death. Offices are full of electrical appliances, all of which are potential hazards.
In this Electrical Safety online course, you take on the role of an office worker accompanying an electrical consultant around the workplace. You’ll focus on how to recognise electrical hazards and what you can do to minimise the risks.
Our Electrical Safety course is broken down into four modules and an assessment. These are:
Our Electrical Safety course is broken down into four modules and an assessment. These are:
Even in an apparently “low-risk” area like an office, we are surrounded by electricity and its associated risks. This module provides an overview of how electricity works, who has responsibility for ensuring electrical safety in the workplace and what the main risks are. It also explores what the law says in relation to electrical safety.
Taking a risk assessment approach to electrical safety is an effective strategy for managing risks in the workplace. This module covers the dangers of portable electric equipment and badly maintained equipment. Learners will also find out how to spot hazards in their environment and their appropriate control measures.
Each and every employee plays an important part in protecting the safety of our workplaces. This module explores the everyday safety principles to promote electrical safety in workplaces. These include the regular checking of handheld equipment and asking some key questions about the equipment and its environment.
Inspection and testing, in addition to everyday user checks, are important aspects of electrical safety. This includes PAT testing by professionals. This module covers the key points about inspection of electrical equipment, including frequency of formal testing and how to conduct basic, informal regular tests yourself.
During the four modules, learners collect a “charged battery” for answering questions correctly. If they haven’t collected all batteries, they are invited to revisit the relevant topics before sitting the final assessment.
The overall assessment is in a multiple-choice question format. Learners must achieve a mark of 80% or above to pass the course.

The most common cause of workplace fires is electrical equipment. Electrical faults cause a large proportion of non-residential fires, often with serious consequences. Fires that start in this way often begin unexpectedly and can spread to their surroundings with alarming speed.
At even 50 volts, electricity can cause serious injuries. It makes sense for everyone to be trained in electrical safety!
Electrical safety is avoiding hazards due to faulty electrical equipment or poor usage of electrical equipment. Every appliance in an office or home is a potential electrical safety hazard. With the proper equipment and training, workplaces can ensure electrical safety is upheld and people and property are protected.
An electrical hazard is anything that puts people and property in danger from electrical sources. Common electrical hazards in offices include overloaded plug sockets, faulty appliances and damaged wiring. Learning to spot electrical hazards in the workplace is an important part of maintaining health and safety at work.
Common workplace electrical safety hazards include faulty wiring, overloaded sockets and faulty or incorrectly installed appliances. Even standard office surroundings that might seem low risk are home to many potential electrical safety hazards. Training in electrical safety can equip employees with the knowledge they need to spot electrical risks.
Electrical appliances are covered by the Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations 2016. Employers must ensure all equipment is safe, in good condition and regularly tested. They are legally responsible for the health and safety of their staff and anyone else who might be impacted by work activities.
