Working with hazardous substances is a dangerous business. It’s vital that proper training is given to any employee who may be exposed to them. The range of substances classed as hazardous is vast and most workplaces will store some, even if they are not part of their daily work processes.
Our Hazardous Substances eLearning course is designed to help learners identify hazardous substances and the control measures to protect themselves and the people around them.

There are hazardous substances present in nearly every workplace. Knowing how to recognise them and handle them correctly is an extremely important part of balanced health and safety training for all employees. The course covers all aspects of hazardous substances training, from risk assessments to working safely with them.
This module explores how to identify hazardous substances. It covers hazardous substance symbols, what they mean, how hazardous substances can create physical, health and environmental hazards and how they can enter the body. Learn what to consider in carrying out a risk assessment and relevant legislation (e.g. DSEAR, COSHH).
This module covers the most effective ways in which to deal with hazardous substances and what to do in the event of a spillage. It explores where to find information about hazardous substances and the control measures that should be undertaken. Find out which steps employers should take to protect workers from potentially hazardous substances.
Learners are assessed via multiple-choice questions about hazardous substances. They must achieve a mark of 80% or above to pass. The assessment can be re-taken if needed.
How well do you understand hazardous substances? Test your knowledge and understanding. If you answer a question incorrectly, the Correct Answer button will appear, allowing you to review the question and the correct answer(s).

Hazardous substances can take the form of solids, liquids, gases and fumes within the workplace. Under COSHH, substances are classified according to their risk as toxic, very toxic, corrosive, harmful, or irritant.
Employees taking our Hazardous Substances training courses will be well-equipped to understand hazardous substances and how to handle them safely, making health and safety issues less likely to arise. Learners will enjoy a grounding in where to find the relevant information on each hazardous substance, the meaning of hazardous substance symbols and what to do if a spillage occurs.
A hazardous substance is any material that can potentially cause damage to a person, an animal or the environment. Hazardous substances can be in solid, liquid or gas form. They require very careful handling and storage to prevent them from inflicting damage. It is important to recognise a product’s safety warnings.
COSHH means “the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health” and refers to the regulations that cover hazardous substances in the UK. Almost every workplace has some form of hazardous substance – even everyday cleaning products can be hazardous if used incorrectly or badly stored. All employers need to think through their policy on hazardous substances.
Hazardous substances include cleaning materials, chemicals, human or animal waste, drugs and paints. Most workplaces will have hazardous substances stored on-site, even if only cleaning products, so it is important for all employees to be aware of the potentially hazardous substances around them and how to store them correctly.
