Poor health and safety can lead to illnesses, accidents, and injuries in the workplace. All of which can have a devastating effect on individuals and result in significant costs/consequences for your organisation.
Employers and employees are responsible for the health and safety of their customers, suppliers, and any members of the public who are affected by their work activities.
Health and safety is important in all work environments. Offices may seem lower risk than other types of workplaces such as manufacturing plants and warehouses, but they require the same level of risk assessment and care as anywhere else. Employers have a duty of care to protect all staff, regardless of where they work.
The main piece of health and safety legislation in the UK is the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974. It concerns the role of employers in providing a safe, healthy workplace for their staff. There are other relevant bits of legislation that apply to various industries and job roles.
Workplace risk assessments are important because they set out all of the potential risks to health and safety and ensure appropriate control measures are put in place to avoid them harming people. Without risk assessments, health and safety provision may not cover everything it needs to cover.
