Water safety is one of the most important aspects of workplace health and safety.
Our Legionella and Water Safety course explores the characteristics of Legionella and raises awareness about how the disease is caught and transmitted, particularly in working environments.
It explores in detail what your employer’s legal responsibilities are when it comes to controlling the Legionella bacteria and offers advice on how to achieve water safety in the workplace, including monitoring lead levels in water systems.
Our Legionella and Water Safety course is broken down into three modules.
Our Legionella and Water Safety course is broken down into three modules.
When Legionnaires’ disease develops after exposure to Legionella, it can cause serious illness and even death. This module explores what the bacteria is, the symptoms of Legionnaires’ disease and how exposure to the bacteria can cause it. When Legionnaires’ disease first develops, it can be easily mistaken for other health issues, so it’s very important to understand the symptoms.
This module of the course covers the employers’ legal responsibilities to protect employees from Legionella and how to control the bacteria in water systems that might be at risk of harbouring it. It also demonstrates to learners some of the ways in which to identify such water systems and to understand the relevant legislation that applies to these situations.
It is a legal requirement for employers to provide safe drinking water for their employees. Employers are also legally required to protect them from any foreseeable health and safety hazard, including unsafe water systems. This module explores the requirements for water safety in the workplace and the dangers to employees of the presence of lead in water.
Do you know enough to keep people safe from Legionella? How much do you understand about water safety? Put your knowledge to the test. Learners are assessed via multiple-choice questions about water safety and Legionella. Pass with 80% or more to receive your certificate.

When it comes to Legionella control, a lack of training, sub-standard communication and poor water safety management are contributing factors in outbreaks of Legionnaire’s disease.
Those responsible for Legionella risk assessment and implementing a risk management policy for Legionella must be suitably trained in the appropriate control measures.
Employers have a duty of care to understand and manage Legionella risks and must comply with health and safety regulations on water safety.
Legionella is a type of bacteria that can be found in water and heating systems. Left untreated, it can cause serious health complications such as Legionnaires’ disease. It is important to know which systems are at risk of harbouring Legionella and what to do to prevent it from appearing.
There are several methods to control Legionella in water systems. One of the most common includes proper temperature control. Making sure water is kept at the correct temperature at all times makes Legionella less likely to multiply and cause health issues for the people using those systems.
Legionella can be present in both natural and man-made water systems. It is especially likely to multiply in places where the temperature allows it or where the water is stagnant rather than flowing. It is important to ensure water safety, especially in places where people are living, working or socialising.
