Poor health and safety can lead to illnesses, accidents, and injuries in the workplace. All of these can have a devastating effect on individuals and result in significant consequences for your organisation.
Employers and employees are responsible for the health and safety of their customers, suppliers, and any members of the public who are affected by their work activities.
The overall responsibility for health and safety in the workplace falls to the employer. They must ensure they take all reasonable steps to protect their staff, visitors to the workplace and the wider public from harm resulting from work activities. Employees have a responsibility to follow all health and safety rules correctly.
Managers must make sure staff have everything they need to conduct their work safely and without putting their health at risk. This includes conducting regular, relevant risk assessments and providing the correct personal protective equipment. Managers should make it clear that workers can raise safety concerns with them if needed.
Managers can improve health and safety culture in a workplace by clearly communicating all health and safety rules and the reasons behind them to their teams. This is a two-way conversation so employees can have input into health and safety policies. They should also lead by example by following all rules.
