The hazards you face at work will depend on your job and the environment that you work in. Each hazard has its own risks which you can reduce by putting control measures, such as PPE, in place to protect your health and safety.
PPE should only be used when there are no safer control measures available to prevent people having contact with a hazard. Where it is needed, it’s important people are trained to use it properly.
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is important because it is the last line of defence between an employee and a hazard. Effective PPE can protect workers from burns, cuts, eye injuries and respiratory illness, depending on the hazard it is protecting them from. It is essential PPE is provided to all who need it and is kept well-maintained.
Employers are responsible for providing all necessary PPE to their employees. They need to make sure it is fit for purpose and in good working order. For the employees’ part, they must make sure they are wearing the PPE correctly and following all the safety rules they have been trained in.
Generally speaking, you must wear the PPE your employer provides for you at work. Employers have a legal and moral obligation to provide all necessary PPE and make sure it is in good working condition. Employees have a responsibility to use it as instructed and report it if there are any signs of wear and tear.
