The terms “hazards” and “risks” are often used interchangeably but they actually refer to different things. Writing an effective risk assessment relies on assessing situations that might cause harm. In this course, learners are introduced to the idea of risks and hazards and encouraged to identify potential hazards in a standard workplace environment.
Control measures are put in place to reduce risks and help prevent harm. This course explores the hierarchy of controls, from the types of control measure that eliminate the problem entirely to those that only protect the individual directly affected. It uses examples you might find in any workplace to enhance your understanding of the course.
Risks can be controlled using the “five step” process. This process takes you from identifying the hazards in your workplace to reviewing and updating your completed risk assessment.
The course shows how, far from being a “box ticking exercise”, risk assessments have concrete benefits and contribute to the health and safety of the workplace.
Using a standard workplace as an example, learners are invited to complete a risk assessment. Through multiple-choice questions, they need to make the decisions necessary to create an effective risk assessment and keep the people working at the site – and any visitors – safe from harm. Keep the risk-o-meter in the green to pass.
Learners are introduced to a standard working environment and answer multiple-choice questions about conducting a risk assessment within it. Correct answers keep the risk-o-meter in the green; incorrect answers push the risk-o-meter further into the red. Keep it in the green to pass the course!

Risk assessments are an important part of keeping staff and the public safe. They protect people, equipment and businesses.
You don’t need to be a health and safety professional to undertake a risk assessment. Many organisations complete them in-house. Our online risk assessment training explains everything you need to know to complete a thorough risk assessment that complies with the necessary legislation. By explaining how uncontrolled risks in the workplace could lead to illness, accidents, and unforeseen costs, our online risk assessment training course is perfect for managers or supervisors in charge of the health and safety of their employees.
A risk assessment should be carried out in the workplace every time there is a change in circumstances, be that new staff, new equipment or a change in procedure. They should be reviewed regularly to ensure they are still relevant and treated like active documents. Every foreseeable hazard should be covered.
You write a risk assessment by identifying all hazards in the workplace and working out effective control measures for them. The best risk assessments are written with the input of workers, since the people doing the work involved will be the most informed about the dangers they face.
A lone worker risk assessment takes into account the different risks and hazards associated with working alone, either some or all of the time. Remote workers and home workers will often, though not always, fall into this category. Lone workers require special protection regarding personal safety, DSE use and possible isolation.
