What is a Risk Assessment?

Workplace hazards that are not properly controlled can cause injury, illness and high costs for the employer. Risk assessments are a key way of making sure employees and the public are protected. This module explores the definition of a risk assessment, where the responsibility for them lies and the HSE’s “five steps” to risk assessment.

Hazards and Risks

The terms “hazards” and “risks” are often used interchangeably but they actually refer to different things and it helps to understand their definitions. Writing an effective risk assessment relies on assessing situations that might cause harm. This module covers some examples of hazards and how to identify them.

Control Measures

Control measures are put in place to reduce risks and help prevent harm. This module explores the hierarchy of controls, from the types of control measure that eliminate the problem entirely to those that only protect the individual directly affected. It uses some common examples that you might find in any workplace.

The Importance of Risk Assessment Training

Risk assessments are an important part of keeping staff and the public safe. They protect people, equipment and businesses.

You don’t need to be a health and safety professional to undertake a risk assessment. Many organisations complete them in-house. Our online risk assessment training explains everything you need to know to complete a thorough risk assessment that complies with the necessary legislation. By explaining how uncontrolled risks in the workplace could lead to illness, accidents, and unforeseen costs, our online risk assessment training course is perfect for managers or supervisors in charge of the health and safety of their employees.

The purpose of a risk assessment is to spot any potential hazards and put in place a realistic plan for controlling them before they harm anybody. Risk assessments are to keep people, property and the environment safe from any damage that could result from work activities. They protect the public as well as workers.

A risk is defined, in health and safety contexts, as being the likelihood that a specific hazard will cause harm to a worker, visitor to the workplace, a member of the public or the environment. The level of risk posed by each hazard needs to be assessed so the correct control measures can be brought in.

Remote workers need risk assessments to make sure their health and safety is protected in the same way that office workers are. Their risk assessments should take into account their DSE use, their status as lone workers if applicable and any travel they conduct as part of their role.
