Stress and Its Causes

What is stress? Every job brings its pressures and demands but when we are pushed beyond our ability to cope, stress can be the result. By studying the scenarios of various fictional employees, the course shows how stress can affect anyone in any workplace, and how important it is to recognise what is triggering it.

Signs and Symptoms

Everyone has a different experience of stress but the most common signs fall into four categories. This course covers these signs and symptoms of stress and how they might affect people in different jobs and circumstances. Learners are encouraged to watch out for these signs in themselves.

What Can You Do?

Excessive stress often results in people feeling overwhelmed or like they don’t have control. It’s vital to remember there are things you can do to help yourself recover. From reviewing your working practices to taking more time for pleasures outside of work, this course explores the steps individuals can make.

Coping Strategies

Management has a responsibility to ensure their staff are protected from undue stress, but there are also steps individuals can take to cope with day-to-day stress. These include both physical and mental activities to complete to make sure stress and its effects are minimised.

The Importance of Stress Management Training

Millions of working days are lost to work-related stress and its associated health problems every year. When our stress is allowed to continue unchecked, it can lead to depression and anxiety, which can have devastating effects.

Controlling work-related stress is a shared responsibility between employers and employees themselves. It can help workers cope if they know how to recognise the signs of stress in themselves and the steps they can take to control it.

FAQ's

If you have any questions that are not covered here, please get in touch.

There are many techniques for managing stress at work. Ideally, you should discuss the situation with your line manager and see if there is anything that can be done to lessen the stress burden on your role. Personally, you can take positive steps too, such as enjoying hobbies and family time to wind down after work.

Stress-related mental health conditions such as anxiety and depression are among the leading causes of sick time away from work. However, if stress is tackled proactively by the employer and the employee is given the support they need, their symptoms may be less severe and their recovery faster.

Workplace stress can have an effect on both mental and physical health. When it is prolonged or particularly strong, it can lead to conditions such as hypertension (raised blood pressure) and heart problems. Both the mental and physical effects of workplace stress need to be treated very seriously.
