Unconcious Bias

It's human nature for us to categorise people by common characteristics such as age, gender, race, weight, mobility etc. to easily process information about them. Unfortunately, this can lead to us making assumptions or stereotyping people based on how we see them. Regardless of how one is affected by unconscious biases, it can impact decision making and opportunities negatively. By raising awareness, organisations can empower employees to reduce the impact of unconscious bias and contribute to a fair and diverse workforce.

What is unconscious bias?
Unconscious bias is making assumptions about others. It is a bias triggered by making quick judgements and assessments of people and situations, influenced by individual background, personal experiences, societal stereotypes and cultural environment. Having preconceived thoughts about people before getting to know them are likely to affect your working relationships with colleagues as well as customers.
Which are some types of unconscious bias?
Unconscious bias can be categorised as visual bias, cultural or social bias, and experience bias. Visual bias is related to making assumptions about a person based on their appearance, the way they dress, etc. While cultural or social bias is classifying people based on their religion, social class, accent, job title etc. Experience bias is ingrained from personal experiences and based on values, morals and beliefs.
Why is unconscious bias a problem?
Unconscious bias may affect personal conduct and decision-making at work. Evidence suggests that unconscious bias seeps into decisions that affect hiring practices and workplace conduct in ways that can disadvantage certain groups of people. It can cause employees to treat colleagues and customers with prejudice, behave with discrimination or favouritism and miss out on retaining or hiring talented and dedicated employees.
