What is an appraisal at work?
An appraisal is a meeting set up by employers to discuss an employee’s performance at work. The common themes of an appraisal could include key performance indictors (KPIs), productivity and overall wellbeing at work. While it is not a legal requirement to carry out an appraisal, many employers carry out annual appraisals to review employee performance.
Why are appraisals important?
Appraisals are most commonly used to review employee performance, recognise milestones and achievements, and set objectives. Appraisals are designed to provide an employee feedback on their performance at work and helps line managers identify their skills and strengths, as well as discuss areas that may require improvements through training and development.
What makes an effective performance appraisal?
An effective performance appraisal works as a two-way discussion between employee and manager, focusing on both the strengths and the goals for improvement of the employee. Employees should leave the appraisal with a clear idea of their aims and all training and development they will be offered to improve their performance.
