The success of any organisation depends on the efforts of their individual employees and it's therefore essential that each individual delivers the best possible performance. Organisations can aim to achieve this goal through performance management. Effective performance management requires line managers to work closely with their teams to continually monitor individual employee performance, find out ways to support employees in improving their performance and reviewing team performance. Effective performance management benefits managers, employees and the organisation as whole.

What is performance management in the workplace?
Performance management is the process of creating a supportive culture in which individuals and teams are empowered to perform to the best of their abilities. Performance management also involves reviewing employee performance with the view to offering feedback and continued support so that employees can develop their skills, work productively and contribute to the overall success of the organisation.
What are the three stages of performance management?
The three main stages of performance management involve planning, monitoring and reviewing. Planning stage helps line managers work with employees to set their goals which often align with organisational objectives. Monitoring stage requires managers to continually monitor employee performance and offer support to keep them focused on their goals. Reviewing stage focuses on progress, recognising achievements, identifying development needs and managing any underperformance.
How do managers effectively manage employee performance?
Managers effectively manage employee performance through good communication and consistent messaging. Expectations should be clearly set out and clear, measurable goals set – accompanied by appropriate support and space for employees to speak up if they are struggling with their work. They should also reward good performance.
