Although contractors aren’t employees of your organisation, employers still have many responsibilities when it comes to managing them. There is a lot of legislation relevant to managing contactors, e.g. Health and Safety at Work (1974) and COSHH regulations, and it’s important that managers within your company know and understand contractors’ rights.
This module provides an overview of relevant legislation concerning the management of contractors and explains the different responsibilities that managers, employees, and contractors all have when they come into work. Throughout the training course, learners will answer questions to assess their understanding and retention of the information.

Our Contractor Management course covers the following topics:
Most businesses use contractors regularly, from window cleaners to IT consultants. The course sets out what a contractor is, the different kinds of contractors and how to select an appropriate contractor. It lays out things to consider when hiring a contractor, from experience to references for previous work.
There can be a blurred area between the responsibilities of contractors and employers who use their services. The course makes this clearer by setting out the rights and responsibilities of everyone in the contractor/employer relationship and outlining relevant health and safety legislation.
At no point should a contractor, an employee or a member of the public be put in any danger from a contractor’s work. This principle remains the same for outside workers just as for internal employees. The course highlights the importance of risk assessments for protecting everybody involved in the process.
Before a contractor begins work, they should receive an induction that makes them aware of all issues they might reasonably face when carrying out the work. It is the employer’s responsibility to monitor their work, both for quality and safety, while they are on-site. The course explores these responsibilities.
The assessment is in a multiple-choice question format. Questions appear throughout Contractor Management to test the knowledge of the person taking the course. Learners must achieve a mark of 80% or above to pass.

When working with contractors, it can be difficult to work out where the contractor’s responsibilities end and where the employer’s responsibilities begin.
Employers remain ultimately responsible for health and safety on their premises. It is important for them to know how to choose appropriate contractors, evaluate their work and its safety and perform satisfactory induction processes.
Contractor management is important because it ensures the smooth progression of projects and reduces risk for both contractors and employers. At times, it can be difficult to know how to effectively manage contractors because it is not always clear where the responsibilities lie. Training in good contractor management can help with this.
Managing a contractor effectively relies on good communication. Be aware of the legislation surrounding contractors and agree shared expectations early, both in terms of work quality and completion time. It is also important to give the contractor everything they need for them to be able to complete their work.
Employers need to provide risk assessments for any work that takes place on their premises and have ultimate responsibility for the health and safety of people affected by work activities. Training can help managers to work out what is their own responsibility, that of their company and that of the contractor themselves.
