HSE Six Management Standards

The Health and Safety Executive provides six management standards that can be used as a guide to good practice for managing stress in your team. They encourage employees to share their concerns and provide a starting point for one to one discussion. The course provides realistic examples of workplace stress in teams.

The Line Manager Competency Tool

Using the line manager competency tool, you can check your behaviour and management style to see how effective you really are at preventing and reducing stress in your team. This course focuses on the four core competencies assessed in the tool and examines the way in which these correlate to stress management in a team.

Individual Risk Assessments

If an employee tells you that they are feeling stressed, you must not ignore this. Conducting an individual risk assessment can be beneficial to both the employee and the company, raising any issues around stress management and making sure they are resolved. Some employees may even request an individual risk assessment.

Group Risk Assessments

Group risk assessments are just as important as individual risk assessments. Carrying one out can help your team to feel valued and work more efficiently and effectively as a group. The course explores how best to conduct a group risk assessment in the context of work-related stress and how they can help to manage the areas of stress in your team.

The Importance of Stress Management Training

Work-related stress affects hundreds of thousands of workers every year. Managers play a key role in helping their teams to manage their stress and supporting their teams through stress.

Training equips managers with the tools they need to spot the signs of stress in their teams and generate a healthy discussion around the topic with their teams, both individually and as a group.

If you have any questions that are not covered here, please get in touch.

Signs employees are stressed include a change in attitude towards work and increased conflict between co-workers. Managers need to watch out for these signs as they could be a clue that employees are overworked or not getting the support they need to handle the work demands on them.

Stress relieving techniques include breathing exercises, mindfulness and a more balanced work-life split. Managers should encourage their staff to speak up when stressed and support their staff in the ways they can, pointing the way to resources and healthcare providers when they feel professional support would be best.

Managers have an important role to play in reducing workplace stress in their teams. They can create a welcoming atmosphere where employees feel able to share their concerns about workload, interpersonal conflicts or other causes of workplace stress. They can also take proactive steps to protect the mental health of their staff.
