What is stress? Every job brings its pressures and demands, but when we feel these are pushed beyond our ability to cope or our available resources, stress can be the result. This module explores the definition of stress and the various causes that can contribute to it from demanding deadlines to conflicts with colleagues and management.
Stress produces a range of signs and symptoms. These can be emotional, physical, mental and behavioural. Recognising these signs in ourselves and others is important, as it helps us to monitor our mental health and alert us to the fact that something may be wrong. This module covers the most common signs of work-related stress.
Excessive stress often results in people feeling overwhelmed or like they don’t have control. It’s vital to remember there are things you can do to help yourself recover. From reviewing your working practices to taking more time for pleasures outside of work, this module explores the steps individuals can make to take back control of their work-related stress.
Making some simple yet effective changes to your working practices can go a long way to reducing the impact of work-related stress. This module covers some of the ways in which stress can be handled – for example, delegating work where appropriate and prioritising tasks according to what is most time-sensitive or important.
Long-term, stress is best dealt with by changes that alter the problem at its core. In the meantime, there are plenty of coping strategies to help. Many of these relate to working towards a greater balance between work and leisure and changing your outlook to focus on positive things. This module explores coping strategies for stress.
Learners are assessed via multiple-choice questions about work-related stress, its causes and steps they can take to minimise the effects of stress. They must achieve a mark of 80% or above to pass.

Millions of working days are lost to work-related stress and its associated health problems every year. When our stress is allowed to continue unchecked, it can lead to depression and anxiety, which can have devastating effects.
Controlling work-related stress is a shared responsibility between employers and employees themselves. It can help workers cope if they know how to recognise the signs of stress in themselves and the steps they can take to control it.
Workplace stress happens when the demands placed on us by our jobs outweigh the resources we have to handle them. Workload is the main cause of workplace stress but it can also result from conflict at work, bullying and harassment, unreasonable expectations and changes to people’s job roles, circumstances or job security.
Every person in every job role can experience work-related stress, so the course is helpful for all employees. It may be particularly useful for people in high-stress positions such as those dealing with the public, those dealing with vulnerable people, workers in fast-paced roles, lone workers or employees handling difficult situations.
Workplace stress is, unfortunately, very common. The majority of workers report experiencing stress in the workplace at least once in any given year. Thankfully, there are steps both employees and employers can take to reduce the risk of workplace stress and help people who are suffering with it.
